Director says coal slurry impoundment rumors are not true

Mary Catherine Brooks
Wyoming County Bureau chief

Rumors that a coal slurry impoundment near Pineville is near collapse due to nearby underground mining are not true, according to officials.

“There is no imminent danger,” emphasized Dean Meadows, Wyoming County Emergency Services director. “The water level in that impoundment is such that it poses no danger to surrounding areas.”

The rumors have upset a lot of people and Meadows said his office has received several calls.

The Emergency Services office is monitoring the impoundment, he said.
