Ammonia spill from preparation plant kills fish

HODGESVILLE, W.Va. (AP) -- State regulators have ordered the operator of a coal preparation plant to stop using ammonia after a spill killed fish in an Upshur County stream.

The amount of ammonia released into Pecks Run, a tributary of the Buckhannon River, has not been determined, the Department of Environmental Protection said Tuesday.

The spill, which affected about 1 1/2 miles of the stream, was discovered Tuesday.

Cheyenne Sales, the operator of the plant near Hodgesville, was issued a notice of violation requiring it to use a nontoxic chemical in its treatment process, the DEP said.
