Tycoon Ross Undermined

By Brad Hamilton

May 7, 2006 -- A group of West Virginia activists paid a visit to mine owner Wilbur Ross at his swanky Fifth Avenue building Friday, armed with pamphlets and a jar of brown drinking water they said was fouled by his mine's coal sludge.

But the concierge turned them away. "I haven't actually seen him here today," said the concierge.

The angry Appalachians, decked out in lime-green T-shirts and buttons that read "Stop mountaintop removal," went quietly.

"That's our drinking water," said Donetta Blankenship, of Rawl, W.Va., where she said coal sludge goes into the groundwater.
