Blackwater spills into Logan County stream

McCONNELL - A broken slurry line at a Logan County mine operation caused a blackwater spill in the Right Fork of Rum Creek. The spill was reported to the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection early Thursday morning.

The spill occurred at Massey Energy's Bandmill facility. DEP inspectors report that a mile and a half of the stream has been affected by an unknown amount of slurry.

The DEP's Division of Mining and Reclamation immediately issued an imminent harm cessation order keeping the operation shut down until the creek clears up and the broken line is fixed.
