Logan mine spills coal slurry into river, creek

MCCONNELL — An unknown amount of coal slurry spilled into two waterways on Thursday after an underground line broke at a Massey Energy Co. subsidiary, the state Department of Environmental Protection said.

The DEP’s Division of Mining and Reclamation ordered Bandmill Mine, located near McConnell in Logan County, to cease operations until the line is repaired and the spill is cleaned up.

The slurry turned Rum Creek black and discolored a portion of the Guyandotte River, the DEP said.

Bandmill reported the spill to the DEP, the agency said.
