This news story originally provided by WAVY July 22, 2005 Line break spills coal slurry into two waterways McCONNELL, W.Va. A broken underground line is being blamed for a coal slurry spill at a Massey Energy subsidiary that polluted two waterways in Logan County, West Virginia. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection says an unknown amount of slurry leaked yesterday from the Bandmill Mine operation near McConnell. The slurry turned Rum Creek black and discolored a portion of the Guyandotte (GYE'-ann-dott) River.The D-E-P's Division of Mining and Reclamation ordered Bandmill to cease operations until the line is repaired and the spill is cleaned up.
