This news story originally provided by WAVY July 7, 2005 Alternative for Marsh Fork school site toured SUNDIAL, W.Va. Representatives from West Virginia traveled to Raleigh County today to see firsthand what has people there upset about a coal preparation plant. Area residents say a Massey Energy subsidiary's prep plant and coal waste impoundment threaten Marsh Fork Elementary students.A recent state Department of Environmental Protection permit allows Massey's Goals Coal Company to build a 168-foot-high coal storage silo 260 feet from the school. The D-E-P also renewed a permit allowing the Virginia-based coal company to store up to two-point-eight (b) billion gallons of coal sludge behind a 385-foot-high dam nearby. West Virginia Governor Manchin's general counsel, Carte Goodwin, was among the visiting delegation, which also included officials from the state Department of Education and Raleigh County Board of Education. The group also toured a former school that has been suggested as an alternative site. The former Mount View Elementary is now a private residence, but owner Dewey Honaker says he'd be willing to sell if it would help the students. Goodwin says the final decision is up to the county school board. |
