This news story originally provided by The Richmond Times Dispatch June 30, 2005 Protest set July 8 Massey Energy Co., which was the focus of a demonstration here yesterday, will be the target of protest July 8 in Monroe Park. In conjunction with the G8 summit of nations in Scotland, activists have called for protests around the world against global warming and fossil fuels. The rally for the East Coast of the U.S. will focus on Richmond-based Massey, the nation's fourth-largest coal company. It is described by demonstration organizers as "one of the most ruthless coal companies in the U.S." Organizers have a permit for a demonstration in the park between noon and 1 p.m. Kirsten Nelson of the Richmond Police Department, said police are aware of the event. Hillary Hosta of the group Mountain Justice Summer said the
people involved in this week's demonstration at Massey's
headquarters are proponents of nonviolent protest. Some groups
involved in G8 protests, she said, have not practiced nonviolent
tactics. -- Greg Edwards |
