This article originally provided by WKYT February 23, 2005 Coal Mine Black Water Release Fouls East Kentucky Creek Officials say black water spilled from a coal mine pond, fouling several miles of the Middle Fork of Rockcastle Creek in Martin County. Environmental and Public Protection Spokesman Mark York says the spill occurred Tuesday morning from a pond at Czar Coal Company after a pump stopped working. York says the malfunctioning pump caused the impoundment to fill up and eventually overflow. Inspectors were on the scene Tuesday evening. York says he doesn't yet have an estimate on the amount of black water released. He says citations will be issued. |
